Evacuations in northern Nepal due to flash flood from Budhi Gandaki River.

Residents in the north-central region of Nepal faced significant challenges this past Sunday as severe flash flooding along the Budhi Gandaki River prompted mass evacuations. The extreme weather event led to widespread destruction, claiming homes and critical infrastructure in its wake. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority initiated evacuations for affected villagers and cautioned others to seek higher ground in anticipation of ongoing threats from the rising waters.

Preliminary reports indicate that at least five individuals remain unaccounted for following the disaster, which saw four bridges severely damaged or destroyed and approximately three dozen homes swept away. The flash flood also adversely impacted a nearby hydropower construction site, leading to further setbacks in infrastructure development. In addition, several power and communication towers located along the riverbanks sustained significant damage, complicating recovery efforts in the region.

In response to the crisis, Nepal’s armed forces mobilized to execute rescue operations. Ground troops and helicopters were deployed to help those stranded, ultimately rescuing at least 49 individuals by Sunday afternoon. The rapid onset of flooding was attributed to a landslide that obstructed the river near the village of Chumchure. The blockage subsequently resulted in the formation of a dam, which eventually breached and unleashed the devastating floodwaters.

The Budhi Gandaki River, a significant waterway that converges with the Trishuli River, serves as a critical lifeline for access to and from the capital city of Kathmandu. Eyewitness accounts circulated on social media reveal harrowing scenes of homes being displaced and carried off by the torrent, though the full extent of the damage across smaller, mountainous villages remains difficult to ascertain.

This flooding incident occurs as Nepal continues to recover from a catastrophic flood in August that resulted in over 1,400 fatalities and left thousands missing. Following that disaster, Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s office recently announced an end to search and rescue operations, signaling a shift towards recovery efforts, particularly focused on the restoration of vital roads and bridges affected by the flooding.

Government estimates project that the ongoing rebuilding initiatives could cost upwards of .77 billion. The scale of the disaster continues to unfold, with nearly 33,000 individuals impacted and approximately 7,500 homes either damaged or destroyed in the wake of these natural calamities. The government’s comprehensive action plan is thus crucial to providing effective support and relief to the affected populations.
