Qatar to Invest in Large Solar Power Plant Project in Lebanon

In a significant step towards addressing Lebanon’s ongoing energy crisis, Qatar’s Prime Minister announced plans for a transformative solar energy project during his recent visit to Beirut. This initiative underscores Qatar’s commitment to regional stability and cooperation, positioning it as a vital partner in Lebanon’s recovery efforts amid pressing socio-economic challenges. The endeavor reflects broader aspirations for renewable energy and underscores the importance of multinational cooperation in building sustainable futures in the Middle East.

Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, has unveiled ambitious plans to establish a “massive” solar power facility in Lebanon, aimed at alleviating the country’s energy crisis. This announcement was made during his visit to Beirut, where he engaged with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam to forge a framework for collaboration in the energy sector.

Dr. Al Thani confirmed that QatarEnergy has partnered with the French energy giant TotalEnergies to launch the solar power plant, which is designed not only to support Lebanon’s energy demands but also to stimulate economic investment from both Lebanese and Qatari stakeholders. Prime Minister Salam indicated that he would present the proposed plans to Lebanon’s Cabinet, expressing optimism about the significance of this project in light of Lebanon’s ongoing financial turbulence.

The Lebanese state electricity company has been a significant contributor to the nation’s soaring debt, accruing around billion in losses over the past decades, and provides only a few hours of electricity every day. Notably, Lebanon has relied on emergency advances from the Central Bank to procure diesel fuel, exacerbating the crisis.

In his remarks, Sheikh Mohammed emphasized Qatar’s solidarity with the Lebanese populace during this critical period. He pointed out that Lebanon has been grappling with severe energy shortages, a situation worsened by the nation’s economic collapse and ongoing regional tensions, particularly the destabilizing Israeli military actions.

Beyond energy discussions, Sheikh Mohammed and Lebanese leaders addressed the pressing situation in southern Lebanon, where Israeli incursions have resulted in casualties and displacements. He highlighted the need for Israel to withdraw and cease its military operations, revealing Qatar’s engagement with the United States in laying the groundwork for future reconstruction efforts, aimed at facilitating the return of displaced populations.

Despite a ceasefire established in June, which allows for a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied territories in exchange for disarmament of Hezbollah, Israeli military operations have persisted. The Lebanese authorities report over 4,300 fatalities and close to 1.2 million people displaced as a result of the ongoing conflict. While many have returned home since the ceasefire, approximately 300,000 individuals remain uprooted, according to data from the International Organization for Migration.

In conclusion, Prime Minister Salam expressed his gratitude to Qatar for its unwavering support during Lebanon’s most challenging times, reaffirming the importance of international partnerships in addressing both energy and humanitarian crises.
