Police report that man shot behind Dunkin’ is suspected of being involved in a robbery.

A man suspected of being a serial robber was shot and killed by a bystander in Mayfair early Tuesday morning, according to law enforcement sources. The incident occurred behind a Dunkin’ Donuts located on the 6400 block of East Roosevelt Boulevard, where authorities pronounced the man dead shortly before 6 a.m. However, his identity has not yet been disclosed.

Investigators believe that the deceased and an accomplice had committed two gas station robberies earlier in the night before targeting the Dunkin’ Donuts for a third attempt. The evening of crime reportedly commenced around 12:30 a.m. when the suspects robbed a 7-Eleven convenience store located at 6800 Bustleton Avenue. Approximately four hours later, the pair is believed to have carried out a second robbery at another 7-Eleven, situated at 1811 E. Luzerne Street.

Subsequently, around 5 a.m., the suspects, described as wearing similar clothing to their earlier heists, approached the Dunkin’ at 6401 Roosevelt Boulevard. According to sources, the men threatened both the cashier and a nearby customer who had entered the establishment to purchase coffee on his way to work.

As fate would have it, the customer’s brother arrived just as the alleged robbers attempted to flee the scene. Upon spotting the men in ski masks, he shouted at them to stop and pursued them down a back alley. During the chase, one of the robbers allegedly pulled a gun and fired at the bystander, who then responded by drawing his own weapon and firing back, fatally striking the robber.

The bystander possesses a valid permit to carry a firearm and remained at the scene to cooperate with detectives during the investigation. Meanwhile, the District Attorney’s Office has refrained from commenting on the case, including any potential charges that may be filed against the shooter, citing the ongoing inquiry.

This incident marks a significant escalation in a series of convenience store robberies within the area, raising concerns regarding public safety and the critical responses to emerging threats. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and its implications for the local community.
