Connecticut Police Report Increased Incidents of Crashes and DUIs Over Memorial Day Weekend

Connecticut State Police have reported a significant uptick in emergency incidents and traffic violations over the recent Memorial Day weekend, reflecting heightened risks commonly associated with the unofficial start of summer. During the three-day period, which spanned from May 23 to May 26, authorities responded to more than 5,000 calls, resulting in 36 DUI arrests, 1,347 traffic stops, and 271 motor vehicle crashes. Tragically, these incidents included two fatalities.

This year’s statistics reveal a stark contrast to the prior year. In 2024, police recorded just under 4,000 calls for service, made 20 DUI arrests, and reported no fatalities during the same holiday weekend. The notable increase in incidents has raised concerns regarding road safety as travel intensifies during the summer months.

Prior to Memorial Day, the Connecticut Department of Transportation issued warnings emphasizing the dangers that typically escalate for teenage drivers during what is referred to as the “100 deadliest days” — a span between Memorial Day and Labor Day. In 2023, data indicated that the number of teens killed during this period surged nearly 35% compared to the figures from 2019, prior to the pandemic. Authorities are thus urging drivers of all ages to exercise heightened caution during this critical time on the road.

Among the casualties over the holiday weekend, a 21-year-old motorcyclist named Tyler West was identified. West tragically lost his life after colliding with a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder that was pulling out of a driveway in Tolland. Another victim, Everaldo Ferreira De Oliveira, 55, from Waterbury, died shortly before 11:30 p.m. on Sunday when he struck a guardrail on the Exit 23 ramp.

In light of the rising challenges on the roads, Connecticut State Police had previously announced an increase in patrols for the holiday weekend. These efforts were directed toward enhancing public safety amid increasing traffic volumes. The alarming data from this year serves as a critical reminder for all drivers to remain vigilant and prioritize safety as summer approaches.
