Virtua Health launches 0 million expansion project for Our Lady of Lourdes in Camden.
Virtua Health, the largest health system in South Jersey, has officially commenced the construction of a significant expansion and renovation project valued at 0 million at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Camden. This initiative marks a pivotal development for the facility, part of a Catholic health system that Virtua acquired in 2019.
The centerpiece of this expansion is a six-story patient pavilion, which will be dedicated to philanthropist Marvin Samson. This new structure will include 78 private patient rooms, 10 modern operating suites, and 4 state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization labs, among other advanced facilities. Currently, Our Lady of Lourdes has a total capacity of 340 beds, and this enhancement aims to bolster its ability to provide high-quality healthcare services.
Marvin Samson, a prominent pharmaceutical entrepreneur, has committed million from the Marvin Samson Foundation to support Virtua’s educational and workforce development initiatives. The new patient pavilion is anticipated to open its doors by the close of 2027 and will emphasize complex healthcare services, including cardiovascular care, organ transplants, and specialized neuroscience services in collaboration with Penn Medicine.
The groundbreaking ceremony held this week featured a traditional “ground blessing” led by Bishop Joseph Andrew Williams, the newly appointed leader of the Camden Roman Catholic Diocese. Attendees also heard from a representative of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, who were instrumental in raising funds for the original construction of the hospital 75 years ago.
Virtua’s financial stability has been showcased by its decision to finance this new project entirely through its own funds, without the need for borrowing. A report from Standard & Poor’s has corroborated the organization’s current robust financial standing.
In addition to the Our Lady of Lourdes project, Virtua Health has plans to invest an additional 0 million in various projects at its 383-bed facility in Mount Holly, Burlington County. The health system also operates hospitals in Marlton, Voorhees, and Willingboro, further contributing to its large-scale footprint in the region.
In the previous year, Virtua Health reported revenues of .24 billion, with an operating income of 5 million. These figures indicate a notable increase from 2023, when the system recorded an operating income of 9 million from .8 billion in revenue. This financial growth underscores Virtua’s ongoing commitment to expanding and enhancing healthcare services for the communities it serves.
