Bronx suspect who fatally stabbed 39-year-old man escapes in taxi.
A manhunt is underway for a suspect implicated in the fatal stabbing of a 39-year-old victim outside a historic former NYPD stationhouse in the Bronx. Surveillance footage captured the suspect as he fled the scene in a dark-colored taxi. Law enforcement officials have released the image in hopes of soliciting assistance from the public in identifying the suspect.
The victim, identified as Shamel Parnell, was involved in a confrontation with the assailant shortly before the attack, which occurred around 12:20 a.m. on Bathgate Avenue near East Tremont Avenue early Monday. According to police reports, Parnell was stabbed in the chest and neck. Emergency medical personnel rushed him to St. Barnabas Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries approximately 25 minutes later.
The tragic loss has left a profound impact on Parnell’s family. His mother, Sherri Parnell, expressed her disbelief and grief, revealing that she had not seen her son for over a decade prior to his death. She reminisced about their past interactions, noting that despite their estrangement, he would visit occasionally when she lived in a different part of the Bronx. The suddenness of his death has left her struggling to process the reality of the situation.
Law enforcement agencies reported that a knife was recovered at the scene of the incident. Following the stabbing, the assailant was last seen heading west on East 179th Street. The building in front of which the stabbing occurred historically served as the NYPD’s 48th Precinct for many years but has transitioned into a venue that now hosts a Head Start program, receiving recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 for its architectural significance.
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the suspect’s identity or whereabouts to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls to this hotline are kept confidential. The investigation remains ongoing as police work diligently to apprehend the individual responsible for this tragic act of violence.
