Man arrested in NYC subway for attempting to kiss woman’s feet and engaging in lewd behavior, according to police.

A man sought by the New York Police Department (NYPD) for allegedly engaging in inappropriate behavior at a subway station in Manhattan was apprehended on Tuesday. The incident occurred on June 18, 2025, at the 14th Street-Sixth Avenue station in Greenwich Village, where 37-year-old Dexter Betancourt is accused of public lewdness.

According to police reports, the incident transpired around 1 a.m. after Betancourt and a 30-year-old woman exited an eastbound L train. While the woman was waiting for another train, Betancourt allegedly approached her, complimenting her by saying, “You have nice toes.” Following her rejection of his advance, he proceeded to kiss her feet and then engaged in a lewd sexual act in her presence, leading to an alarming scene in the transit space.

After the incident, Betancourt reportedly boarded an L train traveling in the opposite direction. Authorities initiated a search and subsequently released a photograph of Betancourt in an effort to locate him. His arrest took place in Brooklyn, where he was taken into custody by officers of the NYPD.

Betancourt has been charged with public lewdness, which is a misdemeanor in New York. Public lewdness laws are designed to maintain public decency and can result in various penalties, including fines and potential jail time, depending on the circumstances of the act. The NYPD is responsible for ensuring safety and order in public spaces, which includes monitoring behavior on the subway system, a vital mode of transportation for millions of New Yorkers.

The incident has raised concerns about safety in public transit areas, particularly regarding the behavior of individuals who engage in public indecency. Subway riders rely on the police to address such matters effectively, underscoring the importance of a robust security presence in New York City’s transit system.

As this case develops, the NYPD will continue its efforts to address similar incidents and ensure a safe environment for commuters. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity or misconduct to law enforcement, contributing to the overall safety and integrity of New York City’s public transportation network.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges police face in maintaining safety in crowded urban transit areas. As investigators continue to process this case, further updates are anticipated in the coming weeks.
