UNT Dallas and UNTHSC announce finalists for president position.

The University of North Texas System has announced the appointment of new leaders for both UNT Dallas and the UNT Health Science Center, marking a significant leadership transition for these institutions. Michael Williams, the system’s chancellor, has named Warren von Eschenbach as the permanent president of UNT Dallas and Kirk Calhoun as the new president of the Fort Worth-based UNT Health Science Center.

Both von Eschenbach and Calhoun have been serving as interim leaders prior to their appointments. Their selection was finalized during a special meeting held by the UNT System regents, who unanimously endorsed the pair as sole finalists for the positions. In a statement, Chancellor Williams expressed confidence in their abilities to enhance academic excellence, propel innovation, and serve the diverse student and community populations associated with their respective universities.

Warren von Eschenbach has held the interim presidency at UNT Dallas since April 2024. During his tenure, he initiated the university’s first Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning and implemented strategies aimed at increasing enrollment. His extensive experience spans over a decade in various leadership roles within the university landscape. He succeeds Bob Mong, who retired after a notable nine-year leadership period at UNT Dallas, following a long career in journalism with a prominent stint as editor of The Dallas Morning News.

Kirk Calhoun brings over three decades of experience in medicine and higher education leadership to his new role at the UNT Health Science Center. He has served as interim president since January 2024, following his retirement as president of the University of Texas at Tyler. Calhoun’s appointment arrives at a time when the health science center is undergoing scrutiny concerning the management of its Willed Body Program, which was recently examined in a report by NBC News detailing issues related to consent for the use of human remains in research and training.

The UNT System board chairwoman, Laura Wright, praised both von Eschenbach and Calhoun for their leadership during their interim roles. Chancellor Williams reinforced this sentiment, stating that the future of the UNT System is promising. He emphasized the commitment to prioritize students in the ongoing efforts of the universities.

This leadership transition comes at a critical juncture for both institutions, as they adapt to evolving educational landscapes and community needs. The commitment to fostering innovation and academic rigor will likely shape the future trajectories of UNT Dallas and the UNT Health Science Center.
