Ford issues recall for more than 850,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to potential fuel pump failures.
Ford Motor Company is initiating a significant recall of over 850,000 vehicles across the United States due to concerns regarding potential fuel pump failures that could increase the risk of engine stalling and, consequently, vehicular accidents. This recall impacts a diverse lineup of Ford and Lincoln models produced in recent years, including popular vehicles such as the Ford Bronco, Explorer, and F-150, as well as Lincoln’s Aviator and Navigator models, according to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Starting Monday, July 14, Ford plans to distribute notification letters to the affected owners, informing them of the safety hazards associated with the potential fuel pump malfunction. While the communications will detail the risks, the automaker has indicated that a resolution to the issue is still being developed. Currently, there is no specified timeline for when an effective remedy will be available.
The recall encompasses a variety of models from the 2021 to 2023 production years and addresses the concern that approximately 10% of the recalled vehicles may experience the identified fuel pump issue. Vehicles affected by this recall include certain models of the Ford Bronco, Explorer, and Lincoln Aviator, in addition to the Ford F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 Super Duty trucks from the same model years. Select Lincoln Navigators from 2021-2022, as well as some Ford Mustangs and F-150s, are also included in the recall.
While Ford has not reported any related accidents or injuries linked to this issue, the company advises owners to remain vigilant for symptoms that may indicate a fuel pump failure. Customers might observe warning signs such as diminished engine performance, an illuminated check engine light, or a noticeable reduction in engine power before a complete failure occurs.
The NHTSA’s recall report further indicates that fuel pump failures are “more likely to occur” during warmer weather or when fuel levels are low. Issues leading to compromised fuel pressure and flow can stem from internal contamination within a vehicle’s jet pump, among other factors. Additionally, a review of Ford’s manufacturing process has pointed to potential changes made by suppliers as a contributing factor.
As Ford proceeds with its recall efforts, customers will receive further instructions about how to contact authorized dealers for service once a remedy is established. Both the recall and the subsequent repairs will incur no charges for vehicle owners.
