A 30-foot German pyramid will be a featured attraction at LOVE Park’s Christmas Village this year.
This year’s Christmas Village in Center City, Philadelphia, introduces an impressive new centerpiece: a towering 30-foot-tall German Christmas pyramid, nearly matching the height of the iconic Billy Penn statue atop City Hall. This striking structure will be placed prominently in LOVE Park and is expected to capture the attention and admiration of both locals and visitors alike.
The German Christmas pyramid, known as Weihnachtspyramide, is an artistic tradition dating back to the 16th century. Historically characterized by candlelit displays commonly found in churches, the pyramid features a carousel-like design adorned with festive figures such as Santa Claus and reindeer. Positioned on three levels, these figures will rotate as a whimsical windmill spins overhead, delighting onlookers. The structure will be illuminated by 3,000 lights, providing a festive glow that can be seen from several blocks down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
The Christmas Village will officially open its doors on Saturday, November 22, and will run through Christmas Eve, December 24. This annual event, which has been a staple of Philadelphia’s holiday season since 2008, transforms traditional holiday markets into a vibrant and elaborate celebration. Inspired by the cherished markets of Germany, the village offers a unique blend of local craftsmanship and festive treats. Visitors can expect to find a diverse selection of gifts, from toys to jewelry, as well as seasonal delicacies like hot cider and strudel.
Susan Slawson, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Commissioner, remarked on the significance of Christmas Village, describing it as a beloved family tradition that unites generations in one of the city’s most cherished public spaces. This year’s expansion of the event highlights the community’s collective spirit during the holidays.
Christmas Village will operate daily, adhering to the following schedule: Sundays to Thursdays from noon to 8 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 9 p.m., with special hours on Thanksgiving Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and a closing time of noon to 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
In addition to the attractions in LOVE Park, more than 120 local and international vendors will line the pathways, offering an array of unique items and gifts. Dilworth Park will also host an additional 40 vendors as part of the Made in Philadelphia holiday market, creating an expansive marketplace that celebrates the best of local craftsmanship and festive spirit.
As the holiday season approaches, the Christmas Village serves as a key destination for both residents and tourists, fostering a sense of community and joy within Philadelphia. With its enchanting atmosphere and diverse offerings, this event promises to evoke the warmth and cheer of the holiday season for all who attend.
