Bishop’s School alumna inspires children with initiative promoting bravery through the “Brave Like Lukas” program.
When Lisa Marie Russell’s cherished canine companion, Lukas, was diagnosed with diabetes, the revelation left her heartbroken and apprehensive. A flurry of questions emerged, ranging from concerns about Lukas’ response to insulin injections to worries about the potential impact on his lifespan. Initially, Lukas exhibited signs of fear, but over time, he demonstrated remarkable calmness and acceptance amidst a climate of uncertainty. This demeanor deeply inspired Russell.
Motivated by conversations with friends whose children had been diagnosed with diabetes, Russell recognized the potential of translating her experience into a narrative aimed at assisting other children grappling with similar medical challenges. An alumna of The Bishop’s School in La Jolla, Russell published her debut book, “Brave Like Lukas,” on March 18, 2025, approximately five years after the inception of the idea. In this innovative work, the 16-year-old Lukas serves as the narrative voice, guiding readers through his experiences.
“Brave Like Lukas” uniquely presents Lukas’ perspective as he undergoes treatments and receives insulin shots. The book features vibrant illustrations by Claudia Krissinger and incorporates real-life photographs, alongside a journal section designed to encourage children to share their own encounters with courage. Russell hopes the book will stimulate dialogue and demonstrate to young readers that they can triumph over their fears.
The work is crafted with the intention of being read aloud, allowing for interactive discussions between the adult reader—be it a parent, aunt, or uncle—and the child. In this way, Russell envisions Lukas prompting thoughtful conversations that give children the opportunity to express their feelings.
Russell undertook the self-publishing journey for “Brave Like Lukas,” collaborating closely with her cousin Maureen Moore for book design and finding illustrator Claudia Krissinger through social media platforms. The evolution of the book from concept to reality unfolded within the past year, supported by a collaborative effort that Russell credits as vital to bringing her vision to life.
Reflecting on her writing journey, Russell notes, “I learned I’m more creative than I thought I was and that I have a lot of tenacity.” She considers the story an essential contribution, one she hopes conveys a message of hope and resilience.
In addition to sharing her story, Russell aims to contribute a portion of the book’s proceeds to diabetes research for both humans and animals. She plans to expand the brand with merchandise such as T-shirts and bandanas featuring illustrations from the book.
“Brave Like Lukas” is available for purchase on platforms like Amazon and through its dedicated website, bravelikelukas.com. Media News Source provides coverage of this inspiring initiative aimed at promoting understanding and support for children facing medical challenges.
