Bustleton Post Office renamed in honor of Temple University police officer Christopher Fitzgerald, who was tragically killed in the line of duty.

In a poignant ceremony held on Sunday, the Bustleton neighborhood’s post office was renamed to honor the late Sgt. Christopher David Fitzgerald, a Temple University police officer who tragically lost his life in the line of duty in 2023. This event was attended by family, friends, and colleagues who gathered to commemorate a man who dedicated his life to service and community.

Christopher Fitzgerald’s mother, Pauline Fitzgerald, recalled simpler times when she would bring her son along while running errands in the area. The significance of the occasion resonated deeply with the family, who expressed hopes that the renaming would serve as a lasting tribute to Christopher’s legacy. Marissa Fitzgerald, his widow and mother of their four children, captured the bittersweet nature of the event, noting how heartbreaking it was that he could not be present to witness the honor bestowed upon him.

Fitzgerald, just 31 years old at the time of his death, was fatally shot while on duty by Miles Pfeffer, an 18-year-old high school senior. Pfeffer was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the crime. The ceremony served not only as a remembrance of Fitzgerald’s life but also a reflection on the impact of violence in communities, a cause to which he was passionately committed.

The event drew attention from various members of the community, including individuals with deep connections to law enforcement, as both of Christopher’s parents had served as Philadelphia police officers. His father, Joel Fitzgerald, spoke to the audience about his son’s commitment to unifying communities and addressing the roots of violent crime. He emphasized that Christopher’s efforts extended beyond police work; he actively engaged in initiatives aimed at fostering nonviolence.

Christopher Fitzgerald was known for promoting unity and peace through community outreach programs, notably participating in the Hood2Hood initiative, which encouraged Black and Latino runners to engage with underserved neighborhoods plagued by gun violence. His father remarked on Christopher’s identity as a proud Philadelphian, underscoring his love for the city and commitment to its residents.

The formal renaming of the post office was facilitated by legislation proposed by U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle and signed by former President Joe Biden in November 2024. Boyle, present at the ceremony, received gratitude from Joel Fitzgerald for his bipartisan efforts in a politically divided landscape.

Family members, including Christopher’s uncle, Juan Marrero, shared personal anecdotes that illustrated their enduring bond. Marrero, who is a pastor and community leader, recalled heartfelt conversations with Christopher, emphasizing the importance of understanding and kindness in law enforcement.
