Late-night television host Byron Allen has made a substantial contribution of 0,000 to an online fundraising initiative aimed at supporting the family of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells. Wells was discovered deceased last week after going missing during a holiday boating trip with friends in Mississippi.
Allen expressed his condolences and hopes for the family, stating his desire for them to receive the answers they deserve regarding the circumstances surrounding Wells’s tragic death. The donation illustrates a growing wave of support from notable figures within the Black community, advocating for clarity and justice in this case. As of late Sunday, more than 2,000 had been raised toward the family’s goal of 0,000. This initiative has also garnered contributions from public figures, including comedian Lil Rel Howery and Auburn football quarterback Deuce Knight.
In addition to Allen, filmmaker Tyler Perry is financially assisting the family by covering the funeral expenses for the young man. Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is also involved, aiding in funding an independent autopsy commissioned by Wells’s family. Prominent filmmaker Spike Lee has shown support as well. The funeral will be officiated by the Rev. Al Sharpton, and the family has engaged civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump to investigate the case further.
Perry voiced his personal connection to the family’s plight, recalling his own experiences with unresolved deaths in his family that have fueled his advocacy for justice. The emotional pain of uncertainty resonated strongly within Wells’s parents during a recent press conference in New York City, where they shared their desperate need for answers about their son’s disappearance.
Wells went missing following a July 4 celebration on Horn Island, located off the Gulf Coast. Approximately 200 individuals were present on the island, and Wells’s friends reported that he intended to stay behind while they left. His absence prompted a two-day search coordinated by multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard and the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources. Tragically, Wells’s body was located shortly after the search commenced, at the northwestern tip of the barrier island.
Although initial assessments by authorities indicated no overt signs of foul play, the investigation remains ongoing, and law enforcement officials are encouraging anyone with information about that day to come forward. Friends who were present at the time of the incident are fully cooperating with the authorities.
Nolan Wells was poised to turn 19 in the upcoming month and had recently completed his freshman year as a wide receiver for the football team at Southwest Mississippi Community College. His friends have asserted that it was out of character for him to stay alone on the island, further fueling concerns surrounding the circumstances of his death.
