Family and friends honor Iriana DeJesus as her case reaches a significant resolution.
In a long-awaited development, the Philadelphia Police have made an arrest in connection with the abduction and murder of 5-year-old Iriana DeJesus, a case that has remained unresolved since her disappearance on July 29, 2000. The news brought a profound sense of relief to Iriana’s family, particularly her mother, Lizasuain DeJesus, who received the news from Detective Joseph Bamberski.
Iriana’s older sister, Iyanna Vazques, 34, expressed feelings of immense relief upon learning about the arrest, describing it as akin to a weight being lifted from her shoulders. Vazques was only 8 years old when her sister vanished under tragic circumstances. Recalling the events of that day, she noted how vividly she remembers the outfit Iriana was wearing and the hairstyle that seemed to punctuate those last moments of her childhood.
On that summer day in 2000, Iriana was last seen playing outside her home located on North Fairhill Street. Witnesses reported seeing her with a stranger, and a family friend alerted police shortly thereafter. The search concluded with a devastating discovery: on August 3, 2000, Iriana’s body was found nearby, concealed in a trash bag. Authorities confirmed that she had been raped and strangled.
The investigation initially yielded scant information about the perpetrator, described only as a drifter. However, a significant breakthrough occurred years later. In March 2007, following the match of DNA evidence from a prior arrest in Phoenix related to a felony forgery charge, Alexis Flores emerged as a suspect. Despite being placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted list, it wasn’t until recent developments that his capture occurred.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced that Flores had been apprehended in Honduras, facing numerous charges, including murder and kidnapping. The arrest marks the culmination of over two decades of relentless pursuit for justice for Iriana.
The community’s support over the years remains a pivotal part of the narrative, providing solace to Iriana’s family amid the enduring pain of loss. On the day of the announcement, local residents gathered to remember Iriana, symbolizing their unwavering commitment to honoring her memory. A balloon release event served as a poignant reminder of her life, with pictures of the young girl circulating among attendees, alongside messages advocating for justice.
Lizasuain DeJesus shared heartfelt sentiments, recognizing the strength derived from a supportive community that never wavered in its commitment to seek justice for Iriana DeJesus. As the family reflects on this significant moment, they continue to celebrate a life that will never be forgotten, cementing Iriana’s legacy within the community she loved.
