FDA warns of risks associated with Medline beds following reports of deaths and injuries.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an urgent alert regarding significant safety concerns associated with beds manufactured by Medline, a prominent medical supply company. The advisory, released on Thursday, comes in response to two reported fatalities and 16 serious injuries linked to the use of these beds, which include models designed for home care, long-term care, and bariatric patients.

According to the FDA’s Early Alert, there are alarming indications that the electrical components of these beds can overheat under certain conditions, potentially resulting in smoke, melting, burning, or even fires. Furthermore, the alert raises concerns about the use of associated bed accessories, which may pose risks of entrapment or asphyxiation.

This alert follows Medline’s preliminary announcement earlier this month, in which the company disclosed its decision to cease the sale of Medline-brand beds. In light of the reported incidents, Medline is providing options for repairs, replacements, and refunds, depending on the specific product involved. The company advises customers to disconnect the beds from electrical outlets until they can be properly repaired or replaced. Users are permitted to plug the beds back in for adjustments but are instructed to unplug them immediately afterward and avoid using extension cords to power the devices.

In a statement released on Thursday afternoon, a Medline spokesperson emphasized the organization’s commitment to enhancing its quality and safety protocols. The spokesperson acknowledged the potential impact of this situation on the healthcare system and outlined the company’s dedicated efforts to support affected customers and healthcare providers while prioritizing patient safety.

Medline, which made headlines by going public late last year, with its initial public offering (IPO) raising over billion, is recognized as one of the largest medical supply companies in the United States. Previously owned by the Mills family for decades, Medline has extensive operations in Lake and Cook counties, employing over 6,000 individuals as of the end of 2022.

Following the recent developments, Medline’s stock has experienced a decline of approximately 12% since October 15, the day after the company announced its decision to withdraw the beds from the market. The FDA’s alert underscores essential public health and safety considerations, prompting critical discourse on the responsibility of medical supply companies in ensuring product safety and reliability.

As investigations continue, stakeholders within the healthcare industry are closely monitoring the situation to mitigate further risks and ensure the well-being of patients relying on these essential medical devices.
