The Free Library Foundation appoints an interim president.

The Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation has appointed Priscilla Suero as interim president, following the unexpected resignation of Monique Moore Pryor, who stepped down in September to focus on family matters. This announcement was made by the Foundation’s board, with Suero’s interim tenure set to begin imminently.

Suero, who has been the first deputy director of the Free Library since 2022, brings a wealth of experience to her new role. During her time at the Free Library, she has closely collaborated with the Foundation and has been instrumental in managing the Library’s operational budget, strategic planning, and overall operations. Her professional background includes valuable positions in the city’s Office of Children and Families and the Mayor’s Office of Education, along with experience in various non-profit organizations.

In a statement regarding her new role, Suero expressed gratitude to the Board of Directors for their trust in her leadership. She emphasized her commitment to enhancing the partnership between the Library and the Foundation to better serve the community of Philadelphia.

D. Jeffry Benoliel, chairman of the Foundation’s board, highlighted Suero’s readiness for leadership during this pivotal moment for the organization. He noted her strong relationships with donors and civic stakeholders, along with her extensive executive experience, which are essential for advancing the Foundation’s mission. The board plans to initiate a search for a permanent president after the completion of a strategic planning process anticipated for spring.

Pryor, who was appointed as the Foundation’s first executive leader in 2023, made significant strides in diversifying the donor base and reinstating regular weekend Library services. However, her tenure was not without controversy. Reports indicate that her management style has contributed to a turbulent workplace atmosphere, leading to the resignation and dismissal of several team members, including key staff within the Foundation’s Author Events team.

Over the past year, it has been reported that at least ten employees from the Foundation have either resigned or been terminated, resulting in claims of a dysfunctional work environment from former staffers.

The duration of the Foundation’s strategic planning process has extended longer than expected. Initially funded with a million grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts in July 2023, this grant aims to support the development of a strategic plan over a three-year period, though an extension has been granted to accommodate delays.

As Suero steps into her interim role, the Free Library Foundation is poised for a transformation, with a focus on stability and renewed growth during a critical period in its history.
