Marlton’s Federal Donuts will close and reopen under the new name Randy’s Donuts.

Federal Donuts & Chicken, a popular eatery located in the Marlton Square shopping center of Marlton, New Jersey, is set to close its doors this weekend, marking a significant transition just 18 months after its inception. This decision comes amid a series of challenges faced by the Federal Donuts franchise, particularly impacting several of its locations in recent months.

The franchise’s owner, Mark Heinz, has announced plans to rebrand the Marlton location as Randy’s Donuts, which is expected to re-establish itself before the end of the year. This change is indicative of a broader trend within the franchise following the closures of multiple Federal Donuts locations across Philadelphia and its suburbs earlier this spring by its largest franchisee.

As Heinz elaborated, the closure was a challenging decision, as the team at Federal Donuts cherished their time with the brand. However, persistent operational issues and recent franchise difficulties compelled the shift toward a more viable option. The owners of Federal Donuts, Mike Solomonov and Steve Cook, who still maintain stakes in the company, are navigating a landscape altered by external financial influences, particularly from major stakeholders including NewSpring Capital, a private equity firm.

The Federal Donuts establishment in Marlton is notable for having introduced a unique mix of fried chicken, artisanal donuts, and breakfast options. Consequently, its removal leaves the franchise with four remaining operational sites, which include locations at Philadelphia International Airport, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, and a seasonal presence at Citizens Bank Park.

The transition to Randy’s Donuts will introduce a renowned West Coast brand to New Jersey. Randy’s Donuts is celebrated for its extensive variety of handmade donuts and for its iconic oversized donut sign in Inglewood, California. Staff members from the Marlton location have been training on the West Coast to ensure a seamless transition and to adopt the operational strategies that have made Randy’s successful.

Looking ahead, Heinz expressed optimism about the future of the newly rebranded bakery, stating that it will emphasize a bakery-focused identity rather than the previous combination of restaurant and bakery. The goal is to create a genuine bakery experience in South Jersey, complete with on-site bakers ready to craft fresh donuts daily. The existing workforce from Federal Donuts will be retained, providing continuity during this significant operational shift. The anticipated re-opening is scheduled for mid-December, coinciding with the holiday season, poised to attract both loyal patrons and new customers alike.

As this transformation continues, it exemplifies the evolving landscape of the food industry in the region and highlights the resilience of local entrepreneurs in adapting to market demands and challenges.
