In Newcastle, England, the Fenwick Christmas Window for 2026 has made its debut, showcasing the enchanting story of The Gruffalo's Child. This beloved children’s book, authored by celebrated writer Dame Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, has been transformed into a festive display in partnership with Macmillan Children’s Books and Magic Light Pictures.

The Gruffalo's Child has captivated young readers for generations with its imaginative storyline filled with adventure and courage. Fenwick has ingeniously reinterpreted this tale with a Christmas theme, creating a delightful experience that emphasizes the importance of storytelling and reading together during the holiday season.

The innovative display immerses visitors in the deep, dark woods where the Gruffalo’s child, seeking adventure while her father sleeps, embarks on a quest to find the elusive Big Bad Mouse. As she navigates the snowy forest, she encounters familiar characters such as Fox, Owl, and Snake. The narrative takes a festive turn with Santa’s sleigh gliding across the night sky, ultimately leading the Gruffalo’s child back to her cozy home, adorned with a Christmas tree and gifts, where she snuggles next to her father amidst the warmth of the holiday spirit.

Behind this enchanting reveal lies extensive planning and craftsmanship. The transformation of the story into animated Christmas scenes involved careful design, production, and attention to detail, ensuring that every element captures the charm of Scheffler’s illustrations while embodying the magic of Donaldson’s storytelling.

Mia Fenwick, CEO of Fenwick, expressed her excitement about the annual unveiling, noting its longstanding tradition and the joy it brings to families across the region. The Christmas window has evolved into a significant event that attracts attention beyond Newcastle, thanks in part to the livestream broadcasts that reach viewers across the nation.

Furthermore, the partnership with Royal Northern Sinfonia continues, enhancing the seasonal atmosphere with a specially arranged musical score for the window display, which features a festive adaptation of Edvard Grieg’s In the Hall of the Mountain King. This collaborative effort highlights the deep-rooted connection the display has with local culture and community celebrations.

As the 2026 Christmas season unfolds, visitors can look forward to experiencing the wonder of The Gruffalo's Child on Northumberland Street until early January 2027. Exclusive merchandise, including a commemorative bauble, is also available, with proceeds benefiting the National Literacy Trust, further promoting a love of reading among children.

The Fenwick Christmas Window remains a cherished tradition, allowing families to create lasting memories during the holiday season while celebrating the joy of storytelling.
