Former Connecticut high school teacher charged with sexually assaulting a student on school premises.
A former physical education teacher and girls’ track coach at Shelton High School in Connecticut was arrested on Friday in connection with allegations of sexual misconduct involving a student. The arrest of 38-year-old Jason Kymer, a resident of Beacon Falls, has raised significant concerns regarding the safety of students within educational institutions.
According to a news release from the Shelton Police Department, Kymer has been charged with second-degree sexual assault, risk of injury to a child, and tampering with a witness. The allegations reportedly involve a sexual relationship that began while the victim was a 17-year-old student at Shelton High School. Investigators state that this inappropriate conduct took place on school premises.
In June, the Connecticut Department of Children and Families confirmed its involvement with local authorities in an investigation regarding Kymer. At that time, he publicly acknowledged being placed on paid administrative leave but refrained from commenting on the ongoing inquiry. The exact timeline of his termination from the school remains unknown, as school district officials have not yet provided a response to inquiries about this matter.
Detective investigations led to the identification of the student, who revealed that she had attempted to sever contact with Kymer by blocking his phone number. However, police reports suggest that Kymer attempted to reach out to her using an undisclosed phone number, allegedly pressuring her to “just do the right thing,” which subsequently resulted in the tampering with a witness charge.
Kymer was taken into custody early Friday and subsequently released after posting a ,000 bond set by the court. His next court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
The Shelton Police Department has urged anyone with additional information related to this case, or any similar incidents involving Kymer, to reach out to the Shelton Detective Bureau.
This incident underscores the ongoing issues of sexual misconduct within educational settings and highlights the necessity for vigilant oversight to protect students from abuse. The implications are extensive, prompting discussions about the procedures schools must implement to safeguard their students against potential misconduct by staff members.
As this case develops, it will be crucial to monitor the judicial proceedings and any further disclosures from the Shelton School District and law enforcement.
