Man arrested in connection with Grays Ferry mass shooting that injured 12 people.

Philadelphia police have announced the arrest of Terrell Frazier, aged 22, in connection with a mass shooting that occurred in the Grays Ferry neighborhood on July 7, which resulted in the deaths of three young men and injuries to nine others. Frazier, apprehended on Wednesday night, faces multiple charges, including three counts of murder, aggravated assault, and risking catastrophe, according to Deputy Police Commissioner Frank Vanore.

The tragic incident unfolded on the 1500 block of South Etting Street, where more than 100 individuals had gathered for a celebration during the July Fourth holiday weekend. At approximately 1 a.m., a barrage of gunfire erupted, with Frazier and several accomplices reportedly discharging 13 firearms and unleashing over 120 rounds into the crowd, striking a total of 12 people.

Initially, investigators surmised that the gathering may have been the target of a premeditated attack. However, evidence collected at the scene, alongside witness statements, led detectives to reassess this theory. Deputy Commissioner Vanore indicated that the current understanding suggests the victims were inadvertently caught in a crossfire initiated by party attendees who misinterpreted a sound, possibly a single gunshot, as an active shooting scenario. This misjudgment caused several individuals to draw their weapons and return fire indiscriminately.

According to law enforcement, it appears that a single shot, possibly fired into the air or toward a passing vehicle or individual, triggered panic among the guests. This prompted at least half a dozen men to retaliate with a hail of gunfire, resulting in the chaotic scene.

Among the fatalities were Zahir Wylie, 23, who was shot in the chest; Jason Reese, 19, who suffered a fatal head wound; and Azir Harris, 27, who was struck in the back despite being in a wheelchair after a previous shooting incident. The injured ranged in age from 15 to 24, with casualties including the mother of Harris’ one-year-old son, who was caught in the crossfire while seeking shelter between parked vehicles.

Evidence analysis revealed that all recovered cartridge casings were located in the center of the block, aligning with video footage from Ring cameras that showed the suspects firing from that position. No shell casings were found at the far end of the street, which suggests a lack of focused targeting.
