Man sentenced to prison for fatally shooting victim outside San Diego Central Library.

A San Diego man has received a 21-year prison sentence for the fatal shooting of another man outside the San Diego Central Library, a tragic incident that occurred on May 23, 2023. Kenneth Chaney, 23, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and assault with a semi-automatic firearm in connection with the death of 20-year-old Trey Walker, who was shot in the neck in the library’s courtyard.

The prosecution detailed that the violence stemmed from a dispute over a stolen backpack. Testimonies from last year’s preliminary hearing revealed that the backpack’s owner was ordering food at a taco shop located a couple of blocks from the library when the theft occurred. Witnesses identified the backpack owner as a friend of Walker, who pursued a man he believed had taken the bag and confronted him near a nearby parking garage.

In court, surveillance footage revealed a man wearing a pink ski mask, who prosecutors contend was Chaney, brandishing a firearm and engaging in conversation with the backpack owner. The footage and witness accounts indicated that this confrontation led to an agreement to visit the library to ascertain the whereabouts of the alleged backpack thief.

Upon reaching the library, the group encountered Walker, his girlfriend, and several other individuals. Eyewitness testimony indicated that, when approached by Walker, the masked man retreated, drew his weapon, and opened fire. In addition to Walker, who was fatally wounded, another individual in the group sustained injuries from the gunfire.

Footage from a nearby camera captured the shooter fleeing the scene, revealing him removing his ski mask and discarding it on the ground. During the investigation, law enforcement discovered a cellphone that had fallen from Chaney’s pocket while he fled. Further analysis confirmed the phone belonged to him, as he was also seen on other security cameras discarding clothing worn at the time of the incident.

Chaney was apprehended two days following the shooting in City Heights, according to reports from the San Diego Police Department. The victim, Walker, left behind a grieving family, including an infant daughter who was just 10 months old at the time of his death. During Chaney’s sentencing, Walker’s mother expressed her profound sorrow, describing her son as a compassionate individual and a devoted father who will not be able to witness his child’s milestones.

This incident marks a significant moment in a community grappling with the impact of gun violence, raising ongoing concerns about public safety and the implications of interpersonal conflicts escalating to deadly consequences. The case highlights issues of accountability and the urgent need for effective violence prevention strategies in urban environments.
