Medical helicopter crashes near Catalina Island; three individuals rescued from the water.
A medical helicopter operated by REACH Air Medical Services crashed into the ocean near Avalon on Wednesday night, September 30, prompting a significant response from local and federal authorities. The incident occurred shortly after 7:40 PM, shortly after the helicopter took off from Catalina Island.
Immediately following the crash, emergency services were mobilized, including four helicopters along with personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard and a specialized dive team. The primary objective of the search and rescue operation was to locate any additional victims who may have been aboard the aircraft at the time of its ill-fated flight. Current estimates suggest that there could have been as many as five individuals on board when the helicopter went down, according to Deputy Tracy Koerner with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Rescue teams successfully retrieved four people from the water. Two of the rescued individuals were transported to a nearby hospital, where they were reported to be in stable condition. The other two individuals who were rescued remain in an unknown condition as the search continues for a potential fifth victim.
