Mick Foley leaves WWE due to Trump’s connections following comments from Reiner.
Wrestling icon Mick Foley has announced his departure from the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) organization, citing the company’s close ties to former President Donald Trump as a primary reason for his decision. This announcement, made on social media, highlights Foley’s disapproval of what he described as “incredibly cruel comments” from Trump following the tragic murder of director Rob Reiner and his wife.
Foley has expressed ongoing concerns about the WWE’s association with Trump, particularly in light of the administration’s controversial policies towards immigrants and other vulnerable populations. Describing the commentary made by Trump in the aftermath of the Reiners’ murder as the “final straw,” Foley indicated that he can no longer support an organization that aligns itself with an individual he perceives as lacking compassion.
The relationship between WWE and Trump has been longstanding. WWE Chief Content Officer Paul Levesque, better known as Triple H, frequently participates in White House events, and former WWE CEO Linda McMahon has held significant roles within the Trump administration, including her tenure as head of the U.S. Small Business Administration and her current role as U.S. Secretary of Education.
Foley’s decision comes after he informed WWE talent relations that he would cease all appearances for the company as long as Trump remained in office. He articulated his stance by stating a desire to dissociate from a firm that he feels enables a leader who is driving the nation toward autocracy.
Both Foley and Trump were honored with induction into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013, recognizing their contributions to the wrestling world, with Trump being highlighted as a celebrity honoree. This affiliation, once a point of pride for Foley, has now become untenable for him in light of current events.
The announcement follows the shocking news concerning Rob Reiner, discovered alongside his wife, Michele, in their Los Angeles residence. In the wake of this grim incident, Trump took to social media, blaming Reiner’s fatality on the political vitriol he believes the director perpetuated. The situation has drawn widespread condemnation, indicating a sharp political divide.
Foley has stated that he will not be renewing his Legends contract, which expires in June, expressing his enduring love for WWE and appreciation for the opportunities presented to him during his tenure. However, he concluded that he could no longer support a company that he feels compromises its values by maintaining a relationship with Trump.
