Monell Chemical Senses Center moves to a new location in University City after 55 years on Market Street.

Monell Chemical Senses Center, a leading nonprofit research institute specializing in taste and smell, has announced its upcoming relocation to a new facility in University City, aimed at bolstering its research capabilities. The institute has signed a long-term lease for 20 years at One uCity Square, a 13-story research hub that represents a significant investment, with more than million allocated for infrastructure and facility enhancements.

The new site, located at 25 N. 38th Street, is merely a seven-minute walk from the center’s longstanding home at 3500 Market Street, where Monell has operated since its establishment in 1971. The move is part of Monell’s strategic plan to adapt to evolving scientific demands and to support its team of over 150 scientists and staff who have outgrown the current facility. The transition is expected to be completed by early 2027.

The current space has imposed limitations on the use of advanced research methodologies, particularly regarding cell culture space and imaging capabilities. Notably, Monell aims to adopt innovative research techniques involving organoids, which are miniature organ structures cultivated in laboratories. The new facility is designed to better accommodate these emerging techniques and foster an environment conducive to scientific exploration and collaboration.

While the new location encompasses 64,000 square feet spread across three floors, it offers a more efficient layout that is expected to significantly enhance the utility of laboratory space. The design incorporates an open floor plan that facilitates shared spaces, moving away from the traditional model of isolated lab environments. This modern approach is anticipated to encourage collaborative efforts among scientists, both within Monell and with institutes located within the same building.

One uCity has positioned itself as a burgeoning hub for research and biotechnology, housing notable organizations such as Dispatch Bio, Century Therapeutics, and Penn NSF AIRFoundry among others. Since its opening in 2023, the building has reached nearly full occupancy, further solidifying its status in the research sector.

As part of this transition, Monell has plans to relocate its distinct “Face Fragment” sculpture, which has become an emblematic feature of the center. This notable installation will be prominently displayed at the new One uCity building, ensuring that the legacy and culture of Monell are preserved in their new home. This move represents not only a physical relocation but also a commitment to growth and innovation within the ever-evolving landscape of scientific research.
