NGO Negotiates with Malta to Repair Gaza-Bound Aid Ship Damaged by Israeli Attack

An international non-governmental organization, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), is engaging with the government of Malta to facilitate repairs for its humanitarian aid ship, the Conscience, following a drone attack that occurred just outside Maltese territorial waters. The incident took place early on Friday, when the vessel was targeted by two drones, resulting in damage to the ship’s front section and a subsequent loss of power.

The FFC, which aims to deliver vital supplies to Gaza, has attributed blame for the drone strikes to Israel, highlighting the restrictions and military actions that have heavily impacted the Gaza region. The Conscience departed from Tunisia and was set to embark on a mission to transport around 30 peace activists and a cargo of essential food and medical supplies to the beleaguered enclave, where humanitarian conditions have worsened significantly due to an ongoing blockade.

Greta Thunberg, the well-known Swedish environmental activist, is among those planned to join the flotilla. She expressed her intention to board the ship in Malta to support this critical mission. Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela has confirmed that the government is prepared to assist in repairing the Conscience to ensure its safe passage to Gaza, contingent on the verification that the vessel solely carries humanitarian aid.

Despite earlier tensions regarding the ship’s docking, Maltese officials have offered to conduct necessary repairs, asserting that assistance can be rendered once the cargo is confirmed. Coalition representatives have emphasized their determination to collaborate with Maltese authorities to expedite the process and ensure the Conscience can resume its humanitarian mission without delays or further risk.

The attacks and blockage of humanitarian aid to Gaza come amid a backdrop of escalating conflict, which has deeply affected the civilian population. Hamas has condemned the drone strikes off Malta, characterizing the actions as acts of “piracy” and “state terrorism.”

The FFC’s historical perspective stems from past confrontations, including a notable incident in 2010, when another NGO ship was intercepted by Israeli forces, resulting tragically in the death of nine activists. The efforts of the FFC and related organizations continue to spotlight the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, resonating with the global calls for peace and support for affected communities.
