Nine killed and ten injured in mass shooting at South African tavern.
Early on Sunday morning, a tragic mass shooting occurred at KWA Noxolo tavern in Bekkersdal, a township located approximately 25 miles southwest of Johannesburg, South Africa. The South African Police Service confirmed that the incident resulted in the deaths of at least nine individuals and left ten others injured.
The attack unfolded shortly after 1 a.m. when a group of gunmen arrived at the tavern in a white minivan and a silver sedan. Armed with several 9-millimeter pistols and an AK-47-style assault rifle, the assailants entered the premises and opened fire targeting patrons. According to police spokesperson Brenda Muridili, some attackers donned balaclavas to conceal their identities.
Reports suggest that the gunmen first targeted three individuals inside the tavern before moving outside and discharging their weapons indiscriminately into the streets, resulting in six additional fatalities. Among the deceased was a ride-hailing driver who had just completed a drop-off. The ten injured victims were promptly transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that as the assailants fled the scene, they continued to fire at random, further endangering bystanders. Police stated that it appeared some attackers rifled through the bodies of their victims, stealing cellphones and other valuables before escaping.
The tavern, a licensed establishment often referred to as a “shebeen,” is situated in the Tambo section of Bekkersdal, a community grappling with poverty and socioeconomic challenges. The motive behind this violent act remains unclear, prompting the police to launch a comprehensive manhunt for the suspects. Authorities have mobilized various resources, including Forensic Crime Scene Management and Crime Intelligence, to facilitate the investigation.
This gruesome event marks the second mass shooting to occur in South Africa within the same month. Just weeks earlier, on December 6, another attack was reported at an illegal bar near Pretoria, resulting in the deaths of three children and nine adults, as well as injuries to three other individuals.
South Africa is experiencing a significant epidemic of gun violence, with more than 26,000 homicides recorded in 2024 alone, translating to an average of 70 deaths per day—many attributed to illegal firearms. The prevalence of mass shootings, particularly in informal taverns and bars, has raised alarms about public safety in the nation.
As police efforts continue to uncover details surrounding these tragic events, authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward to aid in the investigation. The dark shadow of violence looms large over South Africa, highlighting pressing concerns over gun control and community safety.
