Orange County seeks million in reimbursements from GKN Aerospace.

Orange County has formally requested GKN Aerospace to reimburse the county million for expenses incurred during the emergency response to a hazardous chemical threat at its Garden Grove facility over the Memorial Day weekend. The request follows an incident in which a malfunctioning tank containing methyl methacrylate posed a significant risk, leading to the evacuation of around 50,000 residents and the temporary closure of local businesses as emergency services worked to mitigate the potential for an explosion or major spill.

According to a letter from County Counsel Leon Page, the situation necessitated substantial action on the part of the county to safeguard public health and safety. The total amount sought encompasses .5 million in recoverable costs primarily attributed to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, which accounted for approximately .7 million of the expenses. In addition, the county is seeking 0,000 to cover costs related to assisting evacuees, funds which were drawn from Supervisor Janet Nguyen’s First District discretionary budget.

The request outlines a total reimbursement bill of ,071,305, excluding an additional .8 million in costs borne by the Orange County Fire Authority. The urgency of the matter has prompted county officials to emphasize that the financial burden should not fall on the county, with Supervisor Nguyen stating that GKN bears sole responsibility for the incident.

GKN Aerospace, a prominent international aviation manufacturer, specializes in producing cockpit windshields, jet canopies, and specialized bullet-resistant aviation glass at its Garden Grove facility. In the wake of the hazardous event, GKN has acknowledged the gravity of the situation, issuing public apologies and pledging financial support to community initiatives. The company has donated at least million to the American Red Cross, million to broader community efforts, and million to the OC Community Resilience Fund, which aims to assist residents affected by the evacuation with one-time payments up to 0.

The incident has also triggered several lawsuits filed by impacted residents and evacuees, highlighting the ongoing repercussions of the chemical threat. GKN Aerospace has committed to engaging with county officials and relevant authorities as they work towards resolving the legal complexities arising from the situation.

County officials have requested that GKN Aerospace respond to this reimbursement demand by July 31, underscoring the ongoing need for accountability in the aftermath of this serious safety incident.
