The victim, identified as 32-year-old Alyssia Murphy, was shot multiple times, according to authorities.
Lamont Truitt, a 36-year-old resident of Trenton, has been charged with various offenses, including murder, attempted murder, carjacking, and related crimes in connection with Murphy’s death. Reports indicate that Truitt also shot and injured a friend of Murphy’s who was present in the vehicle at the time of the incident. After the shooting, Truitt allegedly stole the victim’s Toyota Camry.
Authorities were alerted to Murphy’s body when a passerby discovered it early Sunday morning near an access road to the Delaware Canal. The preliminary investigation revealed that Murphy had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
The shooting incident is said to have occurred shortly before 6 a.m. on Coolidge Avenue, near Oakland Street, in Trenton. According to police accounts, Murphy was sitting in the car with a friend when an argument erupted between her and Truitt. Witness accounts suggest that during this altercation, Truitt produced a handgun and fired at Murphy from close range.
Murphy’s friend, who has remained anonymous for safety reasons, recounted the terrifying moment, explaining that she was shot in the leg during the chaos. She managed to escape from the car and ran for help. Subsequently, she received medical treatment at Capital Health Regional Medical Center.
Truitt remains in custody and is awaiting a detention hearing in Mercer County.
