Porsche has announced significant changes within its leadership structure, particularly in its research and development division. Michael Steiner, the current head of R&D, is set to depart from the company in May 2027. Jörg Bartels, who is currently at the helm of global powertrain R&D at Mercedes-Benz, will take over the R&D responsibilities at Porsche.
Steiner has been a pivotal figure at Porsche since joining the company from Mercedes-Benz in 2002. He has held various leadership roles, becoming the head of R&D in 2016. In addition to his R&D responsibilities, Steiner has served as the deputy chairman of Porsche’s management board since 2025. His tenure at the company was marked by significant technological advancements, including the development of the Taycan’s cutting-edge 800-volt high-voltage electrical architecture, as well as the innovative ActiveRide active suspension system in the Panamera. Steiner has also played a key role in shaping the Volkswagen Group’s electrification strategy, which is vital as the automotive industry continues its shift toward more sustainable technologies.
Bartels, who brings over 26 years of automotive industry experience, has a strong track record in engineering and management. His previous role as CEO of Beijing Benz Automotive Co., Ltd. has equipped him with valuable insights into the global automotive market, particularly in electric and hybrid vehicle technologies. His appointment to lead Porsche’s R&D division is expected to facilitate a seamless transition and foster innovation in line with the company’s strategic objectives.
In a broader organizational context, Porsche is also revamping its management structure, which involves redistributing responsibilities across finance, production, and sales. Concurrently, the company is discontinuing its independent automotive IT business unit, which was previously managed by Sajjad Khan. This shift reflects Porsche’s commitment to streamline operations and enhance efficiency as the company positions itself for future growth.
As Bartels steps into his new role, he will be tasked with advancing the restructuring of the R&D system and implementing the “Sportwagenschmiede’35” strategy, which aims to define the future direction of Porsche’s product offerings and technological advancements. This leadership transition marks a critical phase for Porsche as it navigates the rapidly evolving automotive landscape while maintaining its prestigious position in the industry.
