Russell Simmons files million lawsuit against HBO over documentary alleging sexual misconduct.

Russell Simmons, the prominent music executive and co-founder of Def Jam Recordings, has initiated a lawsuit against HBO and the creators of the documentary “On the Record,” which was released in 2020. Simmons claims that the film contains defamatory allegations of sexual assault and misconduct that he unequivocally denies. The lawsuit, filed in New York, seeks million in damages and alleges that the filmmakers disregarded evidence from witnesses who allegedly contradicted the claims made against him.

According to Simmons’s legal representatives, the defendants not only overlooked substantial evidence supporting Simmons’s innocence but also released the documentary, which they argue contains damaging and inflammatory accusations. They assert that credible information, including witness statements and calls for further investigation from notable figures in the media and civil rights movements, were ignored during the making of the film.

The complaint also highlights that the production did not pursue multiple polygraph tests that, had they been adequately investigated, would have adhered to accepted journalistic standards. The documentary, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020, presents allegations of sexual misconduct from various women against Simmons, many of whom participated in the film.

Originally, “On the Record” was slated to be produced under Oprah Winfrey’s partnership with Apple TV. However, Winfrey later withdrew her involvement, leading to the documentary finding a new home at HBO Max. In addition to the monetary damages, Simmons is requesting a court order to have the film removed from all platforms associated with HBO.

This legal action comes amid Simmons facing multiple lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct. Notably, over 20 women have come forward with claims of sexual assault against him, and many of these individuals feature prominently in the documentary. A spokesperson for Warner Bros., HBO’s parent company, has stated that the organization stands firm in support of the filmmakers and plans to vigorously defend against what they have termed unfounded allegations.
