Scammers exploit image of late Big Bear bald eagle Jackie for fraudulent activities.

Fans of the prominent livestreamed Big Bear bald eagles have been cautioned against purchasing unauthorized merchandise featuring the late eagle Jackie. The Ojai Raptor Center, a wildlife rescue facility that provided intensive medical care to Jackie, has alerted the public regarding the sale of items depicting her image. These products are being marketed by various individuals and businesses, some of which claim to benefit the center.

In an official communication posted to their social media, the Ojai Raptor Center emphasized that it does not sell merchandise featuring Jackie or any other specific patient. They do operate an online shop that sells official merchandise related to the organization, urging fans to purchase only through these sanctioned avenues.

For nearly a month, the Ojai Raptor Center played a pivotal role in attending to Jackie after she suffered a severe injury during a skirmish with other eagles in mid-July. Following this altercation, she was grounded for several hours. Although the precise cause of Jackie’s death on August 10 remains unclear, it was reported that she had been battling anemia, a condition that affects red blood cell counts. The center is continuing to investigate the underlying factors contributing to her health issues.

On August 11, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife released a statement detailing Jackie’s extensive health challenges, which included a significant blood clot in her wing and kidney, in addition to declining blood values. These complications ultimately culminated in her untimely passing, which has resonated deeply with her followers.

In response to Jackie’s death, the Friends of Big Bear Valley, the nonprofit organization responsible for operating the livestream cameras at the eagle’s nest, reported a surge in demand for Jackie and Shadow-themed merchandise. Within just 24 hours of the announcement of Jackie’s passing, much of their related inventory had sold out. According to a spokesperson for the Friends group, over 2,000 orders were recorded in the week following Jackie’s death, with a significant spike occurring on the day she died.

Currently, a younger bald eagle, known as KD1 and believed to be female, has been sighted near Shadow, Jackie’s longtime companion. This new development has sparked interest among eagle enthusiasts, with the Friends group keeping a close watch on the interactions between Shadow and the newcomer. While nesting season has not yet begun, observers remain hopeful and are pleased to continue witnessing the majestic eagles in the wild.

As the community mourns the loss of Jackie, awareness of the ongoing care and observation of the remaining eagles continues to foster a sense of connection among fans and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
