Five people shot at Virginia State University; multiple suspects still at large.
Five individuals were injured in a shooting involving multiple suspects at Virginia State University (VSU) early Saturday morning, leading to a temporary campus lockdown and an ongoing police investigation. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. near the university’s Quad Annexes, where authorities found the victims suffering from gunshot wounds outside student dormitories. At least one of the injured individuals has been confirmed as a student.
The shooting comes at a time when the academic year at VSU, a historically Black university located in Ettrick, Virginia, is set to begin. Student residence halls opened just a week prior, and classes are scheduled to commence on Monday. Many students had recently completed the university’s orientation program known as the “New Trojans Experience.”
As of Saturday afternoon, law enforcement officials had not released the identities of the victims. All five were transported to local hospitals for treatment. One individual, originally reported to have life-threatening injuries, has since been upgraded to critical but stable condition, according to Chesterfield County police. The confirmed student victim was among the four individuals who sustained non-life-threatening injuries and has already been discharged from the hospital.
Authorities indicated that the shooting involved multiple suspects, but details regarding the assailants remain scarce. VSU issued a statement affirming that they, along with law enforcement, do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the campus community. The lockdown that had initially been imposed was subsequently lifted.

Virginia State University serves approximately 5,700 students and is recognized as the first fully state-supported four-year institution for Black Americans.
