St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children appoints Jodi Coombs as interim chief executive.
St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children has appointed Jodi Coombs as its interim chief executive officer, effective immediately. This decision comes as the hospital transitions from the leadership of Rob Brooks, who has served in the role since February 2024. Coombs brings a wealth of experience to her new position, having most recently served as executive vice president and chief operating officer at Children’s Mercy Kansas City, a prominent children’s hospital in Missouri.
Coombs’ appointment marks a significant shift for St. Christopher’s, which has faced challenges in recent years. Notably, Children’s Mercy is a larger institution, with a reported revenue of billion for the year ending June 30, 2024, compared to St. Chris’ revenue of 3.5 million during the same period. This juxtaposition highlights the differing scales of operation and resources available to the two hospitals.
The recent change in leadership aligns with a period of improved financial health for St. Christopher’s. The hospital has benefited from state aid, particularly through its inclusion in the Philadelphia Hospital Assessment program, which is anticipated to provide around million annually for the next five years. This financial boost is critical for the safety-net hospital, which serves a vulnerable population across North Philadelphia and surrounding areas.
Coombs officially begins her role on Tuesday, and despite her interim title, the organization is not conducting a national search for a permanent CEO. This decision reflects a level of confidence in Coombs’ ability to guide the institution during this transitional phase. The last permanent CEO of St. Christopher’s was Don Mueller, who led the hospital from the summer of 2020 until early 2023. His tenure was marked by controversy, as state health officials highlighted safety lapses attributed to his absence from the region, leading to concerns about operational governance.
At this time, representatives from St. Christopher’s have not made Coombs or board members available for interviews to further discuss the transition. St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children operates as a joint venture, co-owned by Drexel University and Tower Health, showcasing the collaborative efforts to sustain its mission of providing specialized care to children in need. As Coombs steps into this pivotal role, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how her leadership influences the hospital’s trajectory in the coming months.
