State Police helicopter collides with small plane midair west of Harrisburg.

A tragic midair collision occurred on Wednesday evening involving a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter and a small airplane at the Carlisle Airport, located approximately 20 miles west of Harrisburg. This incident has left one individual from the aircraft deceased, according to officials, who provided updates during a late-night press conference.

Lt. Col. George Bivens, the acting state police commissioner, confirmed that the tragic incident saw a single occupant in the Cessna 150 airplane lose their life, while two members of the state police on board the helicopter were reported to be in stable condition. Cpl. Bryce Corman and Trooper Jason Mills were receiving care at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, where Dr. Ashley Ludwig, the trauma medical director, emphasized their recovery status.

The crash reportedly took place during a routine training exercise, with the state police helicopter conducting operations just a few feet above the ground in a grassy area. At around 6:30 PM, the helicopter was struck from behind by the Cessna, which had unexpectedly veered off the runway. Witness reports and aerial photographs of the scene indicated that the small plane was severely damaged as a result of the impact, sustaining significant structural destruction.

In light of the shocking incident, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed a sense of relief over the survival of the two state police officers. He remarked on the potential for even greater tragedy, stating that the outcome could have been much worse. Governor Shapiro, who was briefed on the situation immediately following the incident, urged his fellow Pennsylvanians to join in prayers for those affected.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an investigation, working in collaboration with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to thoroughly evaluate the crash. The investigation will analyze the circumstances surrounding the aviation accident, including the potential mechanical and human factors that led to the midair collision.

As investigations continue, this tragic event underscores the critical importance of aviation safety and the complexities involved in operating aircraft, particularly in proximity to one another. The authorities have pledged to provide updates as more information becomes available regarding the circumstances of the collision and the ongoing recovery of those affected.
