University of Delaware names interim president as permanent leader.

The University of Delaware has officially appointed Laura A. Carlson as its new president, effective January 1, 2024. Carlson, who had been serving in the role of interim president since July, previously held the position of provost at the university. Her appointment comes in the wake of former president Dennis Assanis’s resignation in June 2023, which he announced with little notice.

Carlson joined the University of Delaware in 2022, bringing with her over 25 years of experience from the University of Notre Dame. During her tenure as provost, she focused on enhancing student opportunities by expanding course offerings during winter and summer sessions, supporting students in their academic pursuits and enabling a more efficient path to graduation. Carlson’s educational background includes a cum laude degree in the psychology of language from Dartmouth College, a master’s degree from Michigan State University, and a doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Unlike traditional searches for university leadership, Delaware opted not to conduct a national search for a permanent president. Instead, a consultant was engaged to help determine the essential qualities needed for the role and evaluate Carlson’s fit. This decision underscores the university’s confidence in Carlson’s capabilities and commitment to its mission.

Terri Kelly, chair of the Board of Trustees, expressed her support for Carlson’s appointment, highlighting her dedication to the university’s advancement and her passion for the welfare of its constituents—students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Carlson has demonstrated a keen interest in fostering connections within the university community and advocating innovative ideas that align with the institution’s goals.

Carlson, who is 60 years old, expressed enthusiasm for her new role, stating her strong commitment to the university and its people. She envisions a collaborative environment at the University of Delaware, focusing on inquiry, innovation, and community.

As Carlson steps into this permanent leadership role, she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that she hopes will strengthen the university’s mission of academic excellence and community engagement. Her appointment signifies a new chapter for the institution as it progresses in its commitment to enriching the lives of its students and faculty alike.
