Wells Tire Company, a historical retail establishment, has its roots dating back nearly a century. The earliest records indicate that it began operations in 1922 at 119 N. Lawler Street, where it was initially formed as a partnership between Hazen Wells and Edward Morgan under the name Morgan and Wells. Shortly after its inception, Wells assumed full ownership, continuing to operate the business under his own name while managing its affairs.

In 1930, the company underwent significant changes when Hazen Carey purchased the tire store. Upon acquiring the business, Carey relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, for health-related reasons. Notably, a 1931 advertisement from the company highlighted its offerings, which included batteries, vulcanizing services, and tire repairs. The advertisement made a remarkable guarantee regarding its tire repairs, promising customers that their repairs would outlast the tire. If not, they would receive their money back, illustrating the company’s commitment to customer satisfaction and product quality.

By 1935, the Wells Tire Store was listed under the management of Hugh T. Carey, who had taken over the reins of the business following his father’s departure. In 1937, the company moved to a new location at 115 North Lawler Street and rebranded as Carey’s Service. During this period, Wells Tire Company maintained its focus on providing tires, batteries, and vehicle services to the local community. However, historical records indicate that this is the last known listing for Carey’s Service.

The longevity and evolution of Wells Tire Company reflect not only the resilience of local businesses but also their ability to adapt and meet the needs of their customers over the decades. It stands as a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit that has characterized various sectors of the American economy throughout the 20th century.

Today, Wells Tire Company remains an emblem of Mitchell’s rich business history, representing a time when small enterprises played a pivotal role in shaping local economies. As the community continues to grow and evolve, the legacy of Wells Tire Company serves as a reminder of the contributions made by family-owned businesses to the fabric of society.
