Witte Hall opens at Newport Beach Central Library, offering a new venue for arts and culture.

Witte Hall, a state-of-the-art .5 million facility featuring a community courtyard, is set to officially open in Newport Beach this weekend. Located adjacent to the Newport Beach Central Library on Avocado Avenue, the project represents the city’s largest public-private partnership and has been more than a decade in the making.

Jerold Kappel, CEO of the Library Foundation of Newport Beach, emphasized the significance of the achievement, stating that the completed project exceeds initial expectations. The strong partnership between the city and the library foundation is underscored by their joint financial commitment, with each organization contributing .7 million for the hall’s construction.

The vision behind Witte Hall has always been to enhance the quality and character of events and programs offered by the library, foundation, city, and local organizations. In January 2024, the Newport Beach City Council voted in favor of the project after extensive discussions, establishing a new usage agreement allowing the foundation access to the hall 50 days a year, while the city retains scheduling rights for the remaining time.

Significant support for the project came in 2022 from local philanthropists Bill Witte and his wife, Keiko Sakamoto, who contributed million, securing naming rights for the facility. Their ongoing contributions have been instrumental in supporting the library foundation’s initiatives, including the acclaimed Witte Lecture series that has hosted a variety of esteemed authors and educators over the years.

Witte Hall features tiered seating for approximately 300 attendees, an 11-by-19 foot video screen, and an advanced audio system, all designed to provide an exceptional atmosphere for lectures and performances. Additionally, the newly created Stahr Courtyard enhances the facility’s community vibe.

The new hall is intended to enrich Newport Beach’s cultural and educational landscape. Kappel envisages it providing a versatile platform for various community events, including the Library Foundation’s speaker series, the annual Nutcracker performance for children, and the Newbery Film Festival slated for spring 2027, where K-12 students will showcase their interpretations of Newbery Award-winning literature.

Initially, a private event for major donors and community leaders will take place on Friday, followed by an open house for the public on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. This open house will include guided tours, children’s activities such as magic shows and art projects, and a special “Meet the Author” session featuring former world champion surfer Shaun Tomson.

The facility is expected to be utilized by a wide array of community organizations, including businesses interested in conducting corporate events. Notably, the hall is equipped for recording and live-streaming presentations, making it a contemporary resource for both local and remote audiences.

Designed by Robert R. Coffee Architect and Associates, Witte Hall is a striking addition to Newport Beach’s Civic Center area, notable for its dramatic, seashell-inspired architecture. Mayor Lauren Kleiman reflected on the collaborative effort required to bring this vision to fruition, highlighting the hall as a “modern civic gathering space” that will cater to the community for years to come, expanding opportunities for diverse events and educational programming.
