In a gripping federal trial unfolding at the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse, a Chinese immigrant known as “Tina” recounted a harrowing experience that took place during a trip to Chicago in October 2022. Having resided in the United States for nearly two decades, Tina’s visit was intended to reconnect with a friend and explore the city. However, her trip quickly escalated into a traumatic ordeal.
On the night of October 2, Tina testified that she opened her hotel door at a Days Inn in suburban Schaumburg, expecting a hotel employee with a requested hair dryer. Instead, she confronted a man who forced his way into her room brandishing a handgun and a badge, demanding money. After handing over approximately ,000 in cash, Tina alleged that the assailant sexually assaulted her.
Tina provided investigators with a crucial piece of evidence: a photo of the man who had assaulted her, which had circulated within the Chinese community as a warning against a purported corrupt officer. This individual has been identified as Luis Uribe, a 45-year-old U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent. Prosecutors allege Uribe used his badge to facilitate a series of violent crimes, including robbery and rape against women associated with the Chinese sex industry in 2022. Uribe faces serious charges, including ten counts of deprivation of rights under the color of law, and could face a life sentence if convicted.
During the trial, prosecutors depicted Uribe as someone who betrayed his duties as a law enforcement officer, contrasting this with the defense’s portrayal of the alleged victims as manipulative individuals seeking revenge against a police officer they had formerly approached for help with immigration matters.
