Pena was traveling westbound on a 2019 Kawasaki when, at approximately 3:45 PM on Thursday, he attempted to maneuver past another vehicle using the shoulder near 97th Street in Corona. Upon returning to the travel lane, Pena collided with the rear left side of a 2024 Mazda CX-5. The impact caused him to be ejected from his motorcycle and land in the center lane of the expressway, where he was struck by the rear tire of a second vehicle. Authorities confirmed that this driver continued on without stopping at the scene.
The driver of the Mazda SUV, identified as a 26-year-old man, remained at the location and has not faced any charges in connection to the incident. Meanwhile, the second driver, who is believed to have been unaware of the collision with Pena, has not yet been located, and efforts to identify and contact this individual are ongoing.
Emergency medical personnel swiftly transported Pena to Elmhurst Hospital. Despite their best efforts, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Authorities have confirmed that Pena resided in Astoria.
