Two drivers face charges in New Jersey crash that resulted in the death of an aide to Governor Phil Murphy.

Five individuals have been formally charged in connection with a tragic car crash that occurred on New Year’s Day 2024 in Plainsboro, New Jersey, resulting in the death of Louisa Bradlow Carman, a 25-year-old employee in the governor’s office. The accident transpired on Route 1 around 1:56 a.m., involving a total of six vehicles and initiated by an incident of impaired driving.

Carman, who was originally from Chicago, served as a policy analyst for New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, focusing on health and medical issues. Her untimely death has sparked widespread concern and mourning within the community and beyond.

According to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, the series of collisions began when Cianni Hall, a 24-year-old from Delran, struck Carman’s Ford Fusion, leaving it disabled in a live lane of traffic. Approximately six minutes later, Carman’s vehicle was struck again by a Chevrolet Impala driven by 27-year-old Adriana Vega of Trenton.

The situation escalated further when a vehicle operated by Kartika Shorter, 44, also from Trenton, collided with an SUV driven by a 48-year-old man. The SUV was transporting a 43-year-old woman and two juvenile passengers at the time. This incident resulted in injuries to a bystander who had attempted to assist in the unfolding emergency.

In the immediate aftermath of the crash, both Hall and Shorter were charged with driving under the influence. Vega, however, fled the scene but was subsequently apprehended by authorities. She faces serious charges, including first-degree aggravated manslaughter, second-degree vehicular homicide, and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

Alongside Vega, Hall has also been charged with endangering another person, categorized as a third-degree offense. Shorter faces multiple counts, including four fourth-degree charges of assault by auto, as well as two third-degree charges related to child endangerment.

In addition to these primary charged individuals, Zyira Dixon, 25, of Trenton, has been charged with attempted escape and obstruction, while another unnamed individual faces similar charges of hindering and obstruction.

The tragic incident has not only taken a young life but has also prompted discussions about road safety and the dangers of impaired driving in New Jersey and across the nation. The community mourns the loss of a promising young professional dedicated to public service.
