Drivers disrupt Secaucus intersection while throwing fireworks at police officers.

Police in Secaucus, New Jersey, faced a chaotic and violent scene early Sunday morning when a large gathering of participants engaged in reckless street racing. According to reports from the Secaucus Police Department, officers were dispatched to the intersection of Secaucus Road and County Avenue at approximately 2:31 a.m., following alerts about over 100 vehicles occupying the area and performing stunts while onlookers recorded the events.

Upon arrival, law enforcement encountered an overwhelming crowd of approximately 50 individuals who aggressively surrounded police vehicles. Eyewitness accounts and police statements indicated that members of the crowd not only climbed onto and damaged the marked police cars but also launched fireworks as incendiary devices aimed at the vehicles. This incident transformed the scene into what was described as reminiscent of a war zone, with some participants hanging out of car windows and continuing to perform dangerous maneuvers, including donuts and burnouts on the roadway.

The unsettling event persisted for more than 12 hours, leaving visible tire marks and debris in its aftermath. In response to the escalating situation, multiple law enforcement agencies, including those from Weehawken, North Bergen, Hoboken, the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, East Rutherford, and Rutherford, were called to assist in dispersing the unruly crowd.

Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Miller commented on the incident, commending the restraint exhibited by his officers in the face of the aggressive crowd. He noted that the decision not to exit their vehicles, despite being severely outnumbered, demonstrated sound judgment. The police department expressed gratitude that no officers were harmed during the altercation, emphasizing the seriousness of the confrontation.

In a bid to address the incident, the Secaucus Police Department has urged the public to come forward with any information that could assist in identifying those responsible for the disorderly conduct. They have established a dedicated task force, comprising members from various divisions, to pursue justice for the assault on police.

Secaucus Mayor Mike Gonnelli also condemned the reckless behavior, asserting that law enforcement would take decisive action to ensure such incidents do not recur. He promised that those who participated would face arrest, reinforcing the community’s commitment to maintaining order and safety within its streets.

As investigators continue to examine the events of the night, the community remains on alert, determined to prevent further incidents of public disorder in Secaucus.
