Local entrepreneur transforms Revolutionary War-era fort into popular international dance music venue.

This weekend marks a significant milestone for the Philadelphia music scene, as David Pianka celebrates 25 years of his iconic dance party, Making Time. Additionally, Pianka commemorates five years of Making Time ∞, a music festival that promises to be a vibrant showcase at Fort Mifflin, a historical Revolutionary War-era site. Over the course of three days, from Friday to Sunday, the festival will feature more than 120 DJs and bands, attracting music enthusiasts from across the region and beyond.

Back in 2000, Pianka, then a barista with a master’s degree in physical therapy, was beginning his journey within the music community of Philadelphia. Initially finding inspiration in the works of bands like Belle & Sebastian and Yo La Tengo, he frequented various dance parties and began his gradual evolution into the renowned DJ known as Dave P. The concept behind Making Time emerged from Pianka’s desire to curate a unique party experience by merging various musical styles and live performances. His first event included a mix of both DJs and energetic live acts, evolving into a cornerstone of the Philadelphia nightlife scene.

The inaugural Making Time event took place over the Memorial Day weekend at Transit, a space formerly housing a popular club in the city. The initial success led to an ongoing partnership with venue owners and an expansion that introduced a diverse array of artists, including early performances by rising stars such as The Strokes and Charli XCX. These formative experiences helped shape Pianka’s vision of unique music gatherings.

This year’s Making Time ∞ festival will feature notable performances from acclaimed artists including Four Tet, Moodymann, and Sun Ra bandleader Marshall Allen. Attendees can expect an immersive atmosphere, enhanced by light displays and artistic installations, creating a transcendent experience.

Facing challenges during its inaugural year, with attendance falling below expectations, Pianka demonstrated resilience in overcoming adversity, ultimately transforming the event into a sought-after destination within the music festival landscape. Despite initial setbacks, including financial losses due to inclement weather, Pianka’s unwavering commitment to creating remarkable experiences continues to resonate with fans and artists alike.

As Fort Mifflin transforms into a lively hub of music and culture, the festival is poised for success, with expectations for sold-out attendance this weekend. For Pianka, the evolution of Fort Mifflin within the music industry has been nothing short of remarkable, transforming it from an overlooked historical site into a renowned venue recognized on a global scale. With its unique blend of music, culture, and community, Making Time ∞ undoubtedly continues to be a significant event in Philadelphia’s vibrant cultural scene.
