Following the incident, Loureiro was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Tuesday morning, according to the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office.

Loureiro held the position of director at MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center, where he contributed significantly to the fields of nuclear science and engineering. His academic credentials include a degree in physics from Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, Portugal, which he earned in 2000, and a Ph.D. in Physics from Imperial College London in 2005. Prior to his role at MIT, Loureiro conducted post-doctoral research at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and worked at the Institute for Plasmas and Nuclear Fusion in Lisbon.

In January 2025, the Biden administration recognized Loureiro among nearly 400 scientists and engineers with the prestigious Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. This honor highlights researchers who demonstrate exceptional potential for leadership and innovation early in their careers.
