UFT supports Dan Goldman for re-election in New York’s 10th congressional district race against Brad Lander.
The United Federation of Teachers (UFT) has formally endorsed Representative Dan Goldman in the increasingly competitive race for New York’s 10th Congressional District. This endorsement signals the UFT’s support for Goldman, a high-profile candidate who has previously demonstrated a commitment to labor issues.
The UFT, which represents approximately 200,000 teachers and educational professionals throughout New York City, had previously chosen not to endorse candidates during the recent mayoral primary in which Goldman’s opponent, former City Comptroller Brad Lander, was a contender. This shift in endorsement illustrates the growing support for Goldman as he positions himself in the race.
UFT President Michael Mulgrew expressed confidence in Goldman’s character and political initiatives, emphasizing that Goldman has displayed integrity in his legislative efforts. Mulgrew highlighted Goldman’s previous work to curb policies he perceives as harmful during the Trump administration and his advocacy for increased taxation on the wealthy, which he argues would aid in creating equitable opportunities for all Americans. The organization conveyed pride in backing Goldman as he vies for this significant political seat.
Earlier this week, Goldman showcased his union support during a rally that included members of the DC37 labor union and Governor Kathy Hochul, marking her first campaign appearance on his behalf since endorsing him at the beginning of the year.
In contrast, Lander, who is backed by emerging political figures such as Mayor Mamdani, is vying for voter support from a more progressive standpoint. He has made a concerted effort to distinguish himself by advocating for Palestinian rights and has publicly committed to rejecting the influence of outside super PACs, stating that he would redirect campaign funds to charity if they engaged in the race.
In response to the UFT’s endorsement of Goldman, Lander’s campaign spokesperson, Emily Minster, highlighted the candidate’s longstanding commitment to public education. Minster noted Lander’s efforts to desegregate District 15’s middle schools, his opposition to budget cuts that endangered public school funding, and his advocacy for Medicare protections for retired teachers.
The landscape of this race became further complicated following a recent poll conducted by a super PAC supporting Goldman, which discovered that he is trailing Lander by a slim margin of 5%. This same poll revealed that 71% of Democratic voters within the district have a favorable view of Goldman, contrasting with a mere 16% who view him negatively.
The UFT’s involvement in the race follows their recent endorsement of Assemblymember Alex Bores as a successor to retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler for the Manhattan congressional seat. As both candidates vie for the trust of voters, it remains to be seen how these endorsements will influence the dynamics of the election. Media News Source
