Protesters disrupt grand opening of Erewhon in Glendale over various issues.
Erewhon, a high-end grocery chain known for its commitment to organic and sustainable products, launched its new store in Glendale on Wednesday. The establishment, situated at 520 N. Glendale Ave. in a location previously occupied by Virgil’s Hardware Home Center, drew not only eager customers but also protests from animal rights activists.
The advocacy group Direct Action Everywhere (DXE) staged a demonstration outside the store during the grand opening. Protesters donned goat costumes and engaged in theatrical “bleating” while holding signs denouncing Erewhon’s association with Meyenberg Goat Milk products. This contention stems from allegations that certain suppliers have been implicated in cases of animal neglect and abuse, a claim that the activists assert warrants immediate attention.
One participant, Jennifer Martinez of Los Angeles, expressed her motivations for joining the protest, emphasizing the importance of advocating for animal welfare. The group’s efforts included infiltrating the newly opened store and disrupting the celebration, ultimately leading to their removal by security personnel. Although police were called to the scene to mediate between the protesters and store representatives, no arrests were reported.
Direct Action Everywhere’s protest is part of a broader initiative aimed at persuading Erewhon to reconsider its partnerships with suppliers linked to factory farming and allegations of ethical violations. The group previously reached out to Erewhon regarding changes to its sourcing practices but indicated they had not received a response. The store’s management, as of yet, has not issued a statement regarding the protests or the concerns raised by the activists.
Glendale Mayor Ardashes “Ardy” Kassakhian commented on Erewhon’s decision to open a location in the city, highlighting the potential for job creation and economic growth. He noted that the new store reflects optimism in Glendale’s economic future and is expected to stimulate local investment.
As Erewhon expands throughout Southern California, the chain continues to uphold its reputation for providing organic produce and locally sourced ingredients. Founded in 1968, Erewhon now operates 14 locations across Los Angeles County, positioning itself as a premier choice for health-conscious consumers. The Glendale opening represents not only the company’s growth but also the ongoing tensions between consumer demand for ethically sourced products and the practices of suppliers in the food industry.
As the conversation around animal rights and ethical consumerism evolves, Erewhon may find itself at the crossroads of these pressing issues, potentially influencing its future business strategies.
