Data centers alone consume approximately 4.5% of U.S. electricity, a figure that is projected to rise to between 9.5% and 15% by 2030, signifying a notable surge in demand that will account for 40% of overall electricity demand growth in the coming years. Furthermore, the demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is expected to double to 36 billion cubic feet daily within five years. The energy supply chain operates on a sequential basis: pipelines fuel power plants, which in turn generate electricity that must be transmitted promptly. The INGAA Foundation reports that upward of trillion in midstream capital investment will be necessary through 2052, with transmission capacity needing to increase by approximately 60% by 2030 and nearly triple by 2050.
Despite these pressing needs, developers are confronted with a permitting timeline that averages over five years for new generation projects and can take upwards of a decade for pipeline and transmission initiatives. The lengthy and complicated process deters timely investment, leading to underdevelopment in regions where demand surges, further exacerbating electricity costs for consumers—who are already facing a 22% increase in their electricity bills over the last five years.
The backlog of projects awaiting grid connection currently doubles the capacity of the existing electric infrastructure. Moreover, constraints in pipeline capacity hinder the distribution of affordable natural gas, preventing lower-cost electricity from reaching consumers. These issues stem not from a lack of investment interest but from a permitting process that fails to keep pace with the nation’s energy demands.
