Laguna Plein Air Invitational Highlights Outdoor Artwork with Numerous Featured Artists and Events.

In a display of artistic prowess, the Laguna Plein Air Invitational’s “Quick Draw” competition took place on October 4 at Heisler Park in Laguna Beach, California. Amidst the scenic views of the coastline, visitors were captivated by the skill and speed required of participating artists who were tasked with capturing the essence of this beautiful seascape in just two hours.

Organized by the Laguna Beach Plein Air Painters Association, this event marked the beginning of the association’s 28th annual invitational. The organization brought together thirty accomplished plein air artists, known for their ability to create outdoor paintings that evoke the natural beauty of the environment. This long-standing tradition in Laguna Beach not only celebrates the artistry that has thrived in the area for more than a century but also highlights the town’s historical connection to the plein air movement.

The plein air style of painting, characterized by capturing scenes directly from nature, has been an integral part of Laguna Beach’s cultural identity. When artists first settled in the area over a hundred years ago, they were drawn by the unique beauty of the coastline, ultimately forming an artist colony that helped define Laguna Beach as a destination for art enthusiasts.

The Laguna Beach Plein Air Painters Association started thirty years ago with a small group of five individuals who shared a passion for outdoor painting. As the community grew, it evolved into an extensive network of approximately 750 members across the country. This year’s event attracted both seasoned collectors and curious passersby. Among the activities were live demonstrations, meet-and-greet opportunities, and an auction showcasing the freshly completed works, allowing participants to engage directly with the artists.

Each year, the invitational supports various initiatives, including educational programs for local youth. This year’s agenda includes several events aimed at inspiring the next generation of artists, such as mentoring sessions with professional artists and scholarships for student participants.

The upcoming week will feature additional activities, including a nighttime “Plein Air After Dark” paint-out, panel discussions on the future of the plein air movement, and culminate in a Collectors Art Party where attendees can meet national master artists and acquire original works.
