President Donald Trump has recently directed federal immigration officials to intensify their deportation efforts, specifically targeting Democratic-run cities. This decision comes amidst widespread protests in major urban areas, including Los Angeles, in response to the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
In a social media post, Trump urged the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to maximize their efforts toward what he termed the “single largest Mass Deportation Program in History.” He specified that these efforts should focus on cities with significant undocumented immigrant populations such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City. According to the President, millions of undocumented individuals reside in these metropolitan areas.
This directive follows a period of heightened immigration enforcement under the Trump administration. Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff and a key architect of the administration’s immigration reforms, previously indicated that ICE agents are now expected to target around 3,000 arrests per day. This figure marks a significant increase from the approximately 650 arrests made daily during the initial months of Trump’s second term.
Simultaneously, the administration has ordered ICE agents to temporarily halt arrests at critical industries like farms, restaurants, and hotels. Similarly, in Portland, Oregon, law enforcement utilized tear gas and projectiles to manage a crowd demonstrating outside an ICE facility.
As Trump made this directive, he was en route to the Group of Seven economic summit in Alberta, Canada. He remarked to reporters that the presence of National Guard troops in Los Angeles was instrumental in preventing the protests there from turning violent, suggesting that their preparedness contributed to maintaining peace during the demonstrations.
