Bodycam footage reveals shootout between New York man and police at New Jersey hotel.
The New Jersey Attorney General’s office has recently made public a collection of bodycam footage that captures a fatal shootout involving police officers and a wanted man from New York City. The incident occurred inside the Royal Albert’s Palace Hotel in the Fords section of Woodbridge Township shortly after midnight on June 13, 2024. The identified individual, Karl Gregory, was being sought in connection with a shooting incident that took place on 102nd Street and First Avenue in Manhattan prior to the hotel confrontation.
According to a statement from law enforcement officials, Gregory had been residing at the hotel, located approximately 35 miles from New York City. Law enforcement identified his vehicle in the hotel parking lot, leading them to investigate further. As Gregory exited the elevator and approached the lobby area, he came face-to-face with officers from both the Woodbridge Police Department and the New York Police Department (NYPD). In a sudden turn of events, Gregory retrieved a firearm from his backpack and opened fire on the officers present, engaging in a gun battle that involved Woodbridge Police officers Drew Krupinski and Justin Nerney, as well as NYPD Detective Matthew Mauro.
The confrontation resulted in Gregory being struck by gunfire and subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. Both Detective Mauro and Officer Nerney sustained injuries during the exchange but have since made a full recovery.
Details surrounding the original case for which Gregory was considered a suspect have yet to be disclosed by authorities. In the aftermath of the incident, the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability has initiated a comprehensive investigation. As part of this process, they released three bodycam videos capturing the events leading up to and following the shootout. Before the public release, Gregory’s family was granted the opportunity to review the footage.
As discussions surrounding police encounters continue to dominate public discourse, this incident underscores the complexities and dangers inherent in law enforcement operations. The implications of such encounters often provoke critical conversations about police practices, accountability, and community safety in the state of New Jersey and beyond. The investigation will likely contribute to ongoing evaluations of police protocols in high-stakes situations.
