Two men charged with murder following fatal shooting of 70-year-old man during carjacking in Delaware County.

A tragic incident in West Philadelphia has led to the charging of two men with murder following the shooting death of a 70-year-old Delaware County resident during an alleged carjacking. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, shortly after 5 p.m., when Carmen Suero Jr. of Drexel Hill left his car running outside a residence on the 300 block of North 63rd Street.

According to Police Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore, the situation unfolded as a crime of opportunity when the two suspects attempted to steal Suero’s vehicle. Upon returning to his car, Suero engaged in a physical confrontation with the assailants. During the altercation, one of the suspects brandished a firearm and shot Suero once in the back. Emergency services transported Suero to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just minutes later, at 5:24 p.m.

The assailants, identified as Nysiir Peoples and Nasir Brogdon, fled the scene in Suero’s vehicle. They drove approximately one block before abandoning the car and continuing their escape on foot. Law enforcement quickly located and apprehended both men nearby.

Following the incident, Peoples and Brogdon were charged with murder, robbery, and other related offenses. A single 9mm shell casing was recovered from the crime scene, providing further evidence of the tragic encounter.

As of the beginning of this week, Philadelphia has reported a total of 123 homicides in 2023, reflecting a decrease of more than 11% compared to the same period last year, when the number of homicides stood at 139. Police data indicates ongoing crime trends, highlighting the persistent challenges the city faces in terms of violence and public safety.

The deadly encounter serves as a grim reminder of the risks associated with carjacking and the larger issue of gun violence affecting urban areas. Community leaders and law enforcement officials continue to seek solutions to enhance public safety and prevent such senseless acts of violence in the future.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing, as authorities work to gather additional evidence and ensure justice for Suero and his family.
